The .p101 Network Won a Contest!

Handshake has a great community full of people interested in this experimental DNS protocol. Every single day I can check one of the Discord servers, a weekly mailer, or a Twitter thread and always find new, thought provoking conversation about the strengths and weaknesses of Handshake domains. While there has been some recent development and new tools built for users of Handshake (Beacon, Hnschat, etc) , the majority of attention spent on the protocol is via speculating on names in the hope of a future profit. Enter the @HandshakeSLDs Twitter user.

The @HandshakeSLDs account primarily posts autogenerated content every time it is alerted that someone has registered a second-level domain on someone else’s top level domain. It is useful to have around so that you can see which TLDs are most popular for SLD registration and what kinds of names are being registered. But for all of the second-level registrations featured in posts there is little content growth to keep up with the widening of the namespace. I think the person who runs the account picked up on this, too, because they decided to sponsor a contest/giveaway for those who hosted content exclusive to a particular subdomain.

I saw this as a perfect opportunity to get the .p101 name out there and raise awareness for this little project I have been working on. The giveaway is just an added bonus in my opinion. So a few days after I first saw the contest post I drafted a tweet response. I wanted to highlight the fact that .p101 is an entire network and not just a TLD to host a meme or something, so I made sure to include the fact that there are almost 100 subdomains in addition to the nic subdomain that hosts this website.

Looking back on it now I made the mistake of including an @HandshakeSLDs as the very first word because I think it put the tween in some weird category where it just cannot be found. It doesn’t show up on my list of posts or replies, so I honestly even struggled to find it again to write this post. Thankfully HandshakeSLDs liked the post so it still appears in my notifications. But I didn’t have too much time to dwell on this fact because soon after they announced that I was one of the five winners in the subdomain category!

I have been incredibly busy with school this month and will continue to be busy going into finals, which is why I could only find the time to make this one post. The real motivator for this post is that I noticed I had made at least one post every month since I created this website, and I’d hate to break the streak already. Hopefully by this time next month I will have a more technical update to share.
